English Malayalam Spice Names സുഗന്ധവ്യഞ്ജനങ്ങളുടെ മലയാളം നാമങ്ങള്‍

Here is a Glossary of commonly used Indian Spices. 

  • Patta/Karugapatta (പട്ട/കറുകപ്പട്ട) – Cinnamon
  • Elakka (ഏലക്കായ) – Cardamom
  • Grambu (ഗ്രാമ്പൂ) – Cloves
  • Jathikka (ജാതിക്ക) – Nutmeg
  • JathiPoo (ജാതിപ്പൂ) – Mace
  • Jeerakam (ജീരകം) – Cumin
  • Perum Jeerakam (പെരുംജീരകം) (Saumph or Moti saumph in Hindi) – Fennel Seeds/ Sweet Cumin
  • Karinjeerakam (കരിംജീരകം) (Kaala Jeera or Shah Jeera in Hindi) – Black Cumin/ Black Caraway – (Nigella Seeds are also known as Black Cumin though it is entirely different from Kaala Jeera.)
  • Ayamodagam (അയമോദകം) – Ajowan caraway / Thymol seeds/ Carom/ Ajowan/ Ajwain
  • Ellu (എള്ള്) – Sesame seeds
  • Kunkumapoov (കുങ്കുമപ്പൂവ്) – Saffron
  • Uluva (ഉലുവ) – Fenugreek
  • Kayam (കായം) – Asafoetida
  • Tulasi (തുളസി) – Basil
  • Karutha Uppu (കറുത്ത ഉപ്പ്) – Black Salt
  • Karivepala / Vepala (കറിവേപ്പില/വേപ്പില) – Curry Leaves
  • Malliyilla / KothaMalli (മല്ലിയില/കൊത്തമല്ലി) – Cilantro / Coriander Leaves
  • Manjal (മഞ്ഞള്‍) – Turmeric
  • Malli (മല്ലി) – Coriander
  • Mulaku (മുളക്) – Chilly
  • Kurumulaku (കുരുമുളക്) – Pepper
